REVIEW: Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man’ from Insomniac Games Is a Dream Come True For Every Spider-Man Fan

Marvel's Spider-Man from Insomniac Games is one of those games that, from the very first minute, shows that the developers truly knew how to utilize the potential of one of Marvel's most iconic characters. The game debuted in 2018 and, despite its age, still manages to impress. Insomniac has created not only a very good superhero game, but above all, a fantastic action-adventure game that lets you feel like a real-life Spider-Man.

One of the game's greatest strengths is undoubtedly the system for traveling in New York. Swinging between buildings is incredibly fluid, dynamic, and incredibly satisfying. Simply moving from one location to another can be a joy, and I often found myself simply web-hopping instead of fast-traveling. Spider-Man moves through the city very naturally, and the various jumps, bouncing off buildings, and using webs make exploration one of the game's strongest elements.

The combat system is also excellent. It's fast, effective, and relatively easy to master, yet offers a wealth of possibilities. You can use various attack combinations, avoid enemies, and utilize the environment, gadgets, and webs. As your character develops, you unlock new abilities, making combat even more spectacular. Battles can feel almost like a scene from a Marvel movie, especially when Spider-Man begins to traverse the entire environment and attack multiple enemies simultaneously.

New York also deserves great praise. The city is highly detailed, full of landmarks, and feels alive. You can freely explore Manhattan, engage in various activities, collect collectibles, and apprehend criminals. The developers have meticulously crafted details to ensure the game world doesn't feel like a blank map designed solely for traversal. Furthermore, the ability to climb virtually any building and freely move between streets provides a tremendous sense of freedom.

The graphics also continue to look very good. Character models, animations, lighting effects, and New York itself have been crafted with meticulous attention to detail. The action scenes, which feature a lot of action on screen, look particularly impressive. The whole thing has a very cinematic feel and perfectly captures the atmosphere of Spider-Man's comic book world.

The biggest surprise, however, may be the plot. Peter Parker's story is much more mature than one might initially expect. The game shows not only Spider-Man as a superhero, but also Peter as an ordinary man struggling to balance his personal life with his responsibility to the people of New York. This makes it easier to engage with his story and understand the decisions he makes. The plot has both humorous moments and truly emotional scenes.

The characters are also very well-written. Peter Parker is a likeable and believable protagonist, and his relationships with other characters are a key element of the story. Miles Morales, Mary Jane, Aunt May, and the other characters are not just extras; they have their own roles and influence the events. Spider-Man's enemies are also presented in an interesting way, and their presence gives the plot the appropriate scale and keeps something happening.

The game isn't without its flaws, however. The biggest problem, in my opinion, is the repetitive nature of some activities and missions. Initially, the side quests are very enjoyable, but after a while, you'll notice that some of them follow similar patterns. This makes some side missions and activities feel monotonous, especially if you want to complete the game 100%. Similarly, some mechanics may lose their impact after a few hours. However, this isn't a major flaw enough to completely ruin the experience.

Ultimately, Marvel's Spider-Man is a great game that perfectly captures the character of Spider-Man. Insomniac Games has created a game with a very good movement system, impressive combat, a well-designed city, good graphics, and, above all, an interesting and exciting story. The greatest joy comes from simply being able to assume the role of Spider-Man and freely traverse New York on his webs. Despite a few repetitive and at times monotonous activities, the game remains one of the best superhero games. This is a title that every Spider-Man fan should check out, even people who aren't normally big Marvel fans.
