LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is a new open-world action game developed by TT Games and published by Warner Bros. Games. Officially announced at Gamescom 2025, the game has been named as the biggest and most ambitious installment in the LEGO Batman franchise to date. The game is scheduled for release on May 22, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It will be released on Nintendo Switch 2 later this year. According to the developers, the project will be a "celebration of the entire Batman legacy" and will draw inspiration from comics, animated series, films, and previous Dark Knight games.
This is the first full-fledged LEGO Batman game since 2014's “LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham”. While TT Games later developed “LEGO DC Super-Villains” in 2018, Batman was mostly a part of the larger DC universe. This time, the studio decided to return to Bruce Wayne's more personal story and refocus the entire production on Gotham City. Official descriptions suggest the story will follow Batman's journey from training with the League of Shadows to becoming the city's legendary defender. The game won't be an adaptation of a single story, but a blend of multiple eras and character interpretations. What's important is that it's not the prequel, sequel or spin-off of the previous LEGO Batman games. It's a completety new story.
The biggest new feature is the massive, open-world Gotham City. TT Games has confirmed that the city will be fully explorable and many times larger than locations in previous LEGO games. The developers are calling Gotham "the most vibrant city in LEGO gaming history." According to the announcement, each district will have a distinct atmosphere and architecture; a wealthy financial center, the dark alleys of the East End, the industrial docks, and a gothic old town inspired by classic comics. Promotional materials shows numerous of neon signs, traffic, dynamic weather, and changing times of day. The game will feature a full day and night cycle, and some crimes and side events will only be available during specific hours. The city will also be much larger than Gotham City from Rocksteady Studios' “Batman: Arkham Knight”, which featured three large, playable islands.
Players will be able to freely travel the streets and rooftops of Gotham City using Batman's grappling hook, cape gliding, and various versions of the Batmobile and Batcycles. Confirmed vehicles include the classic Batmobile, the Tumbler from Christopher Nolan's trilogy, and a car inspired by the 2022 film “The Batman”. Each vehicle will have different abilities. Some will be faster, others better suited for chases or combat. According to the developers, players will also be able to upgrade vehicles and change their appearance.
Gotham City will feature iconic Batman locations such as Arkham Asylum, Ace Chemicals, Wayne Tower, Crime Alley, the Iceberg Lounge, and the Batcave. Some buildings will be fully explorable. Particular attention has been paid to the Batcave, which will serve as the player's main operations center. This is where players will be able to unlock new suits, upgrade gadgets, view trophies, and switch between active characters. According to the announcement, the Batcave will be the largest base in LEGO video game history.
Much attention was paid to the new combat system. The developers officially confirmed more dynamic combat, smoother animations, and a greater emphasis on gadgets and stealth. Fans quickly noticed clear inspiration from Rocksteady's “Batman: Arkham” series. Trailers showcase smooth transitions between enemies, spectacular combos, and a more cinematic camerawork than in previous LEGO games. Elements reminiscent of Detective Mode and the ability to silently eliminate enemies using the environment were also introduced. Batman will be able to use classic gadgets such as batarangs, smoke grenades, a grappling hook, and remote-controlled Wayne Enterprises technology.
The game will also expand on detective elements. In some missions, players will analyze crime scenes, search for clues, and reconstruct events using a special detective mode, known from “Batman: Arkham” series. According to TT Games, some puzzles have been designed specifically with older Batman fans in mind, making them more complex than typical puzzles from previous LEGO games. Yes, Riddler Trophies and Challanges unfortunately will return.
Side characters will also play a significant role. Batman, Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, Catwoman, and Commissioner Gordon have been officially confirmed. Enemies include the Joker, Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Two-Face, and Bane. The trailers also feature brief shots of Scarecrow, Killer Croc, and Ra's al Ghul, though their presence has not yet been officially discussed by the developers. However, the game, compared to other LEGO productions, will only have 6 playable characters: Batman, Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, Catwoman and Talia al Ghul. In September, Joker & Harley Quinn will receive their own DLC, which will allow us to play as them.
One of the game's most interesting features is the alternate versions of Batman. TT Games has confirmed that players will unlock costumes inspired by different eras of the character. Promotional materials have already revealed costumes inspired by Tim Burton's “Batman”, “The Dark Knight” trilogy, “Batman: The Animated Series”, and Frank Miller's comic “The Dark Knight Returns”. Each costume will feature its own animations, effects, and unique combat style. Some versions of Batman will also change the interface and music while exploring Gotham.
Interestingly, the developers drew significant inspiration not only from the films and comics, but also from previous Batman games. Fans have noticed numerous references to the Arkham series and even the 2008's “LEGO Batman: The Videogame”. One of the trailers features a recreated scene from the first LEGO Batman game, and a classic computer from the original TT Games trilogy appears in the Batcave. The developers also showed off the original suit from the 2008 game, which will be playable. The developers also admitted that during production they analyzed the architecture of Gotham from Burton's films and Bruce Timm's animated series.
Warner Bros. Games has also confirmed details about the game's edition. In addition to the standard version, a Deluxe Edition will be available, containing additional character and skin packs, including sets inspired by the “Batman: Arkham” trilogy and “Batman: Beyond”. The Deluxe Edition will also provide three days of early access to the game. A pre-order bonus has also been confirmed: a costume inspired by Frank Miller's comic book “The Dark Knight Returns”. Interestingly, the game is closely tied to the new LEGO Batman line for 2026. Some physical LEGO sets will unlock bonus content in the game, including additional vehicles and special costumes. According to promotional information, this includes the Batmobile from “Batman v Superman”, a vehicle from “The Batman”, and classic designs inspired by earlier films. Fans have also discovered information about a special golden Batsuit, accesible only with select LEGO set.
The PC version has generated considerable discussion in recent months. Initially, the recommended system requirements suggested a whopping 32 GB of RAM, which was met with criticism from players. After subsequent optimizations, TT Games lowered the requirements to 16 GB RAM, saying that the earlier information was from a development version of the game. The studio also assures that Legacy of the Dark Knight will support ray tracing, DLSS, and very fast loading times on next-gen consoles.
Several trailers and gameplay videos have been released so far. These include Gotham City exploration, the Batcave, the combat system, and some of the heroes and villains. Fans have warmly welcomed the game's more cinematic style, and many believe it may be the most ambitious LEGO production since “LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga”. Gotham City's atmosphere, which many players believe resembles a fusion of the “Batman: Arkham” universe with the humor of classic LEGO games, is particularly praised.
The developers also revealed that players will have a huge number of alternate Batman costumes to choose from, including versions from Burton's films, Nolan's films, “Batman v Superman”, and “The Batman”. Fans also suspect the presence of special missions inspired by iconic comic book stories such as “Knightfall”, “Year One”, and “The Killing Joke”.
