The "Planet of the Apes" universe is expanding once again. As reported by Deadline, Disney has officially begun working on the next film set in a world where intelligent apes dominate humans. However, it won't be a direct sequel to the last installment, but a completely new chapter in this iconic franchise.

Matt Shakman, known for his work on the The Fantastic Four: First Steps film and the WandaVision TV show, will direct. Josh Friedman, who already has experience with the franchise, having worked on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, will write the script.

A New Beginning Instead of a Sequel

The filmmakers are moving away from directly expanding on the story from the previous film. Instead, they plan to create an entirely new story set in the same world.

This represents a fresh approach to the universe; new characters, new conflicts, and a potential new direction for the entire series. While the action will still take place in a world where apes have taken over, plot details are being kept under wraps for now.

A Proven Creative Duo

The choice of Shakman and Friedman is no accident. Both creators have collaborated before and have experience in major science fiction productions. The studio is therefore focusing on a duo that can combine spectacle with solid storytelling.

Additionally, the project will be produced by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, creators responsible for the series' previous successes.

The decision to create a new story instead of a sequel demonstrates the studio's desire to experiment with the ‘Planet of the Apes’ formula. Instead of confining itself to a single plot line, the creators are exploring how flexible this universe can be and how many different stories can be told within it.

It also signals that the franchise still has enormous potential, both commercially and artistically. The new film could open the door to further productions, even entirely new sagas within this universe.

What's Next?

A release date and cast details have not been announced yet. The project is in the early stages of development, but it is already generating significant interest from fans.

One thing is certain: ‘Planet of the Apes’ hasn't said its last word yet, and the upcoming film could be the beginning of another era for this legendary franchise.

The information was first reported by Deadline.
